Global coastal event! Possibly May this month? I have thought for a while now that May could be a possible large earthquake month going by the cycles the last 3 yrs. But very leary also of it. Now we did have some good size earthquake activity already this month, so maybe that was it? @Whiteangel wondering on any alignments or solar activity ideas.

New SARS cousin finally has a name : MERS

Every virus needs a catchy name, and now the new coronavirus linked to the Middle East that has infected 40 people and killed half of them has one: Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus or (MERS-CoV).
Various scientists have been calling it MERS, but the Coronavirus Study Group, which groups experts from around the world, made it official on Thursday.
“This name is endorsed by the discoverers of the virus and other researchers that pioneered MERS-CoV studies, by the World Health Organization and by the Saudi Ministry of Health. We strongly recommend the use of this name in scientific and other communications,” the group, led by Raoul de Groot of Utrecht University in the Netherlands, wrote in the Journal of Virology.
The issue of naming viruses can be touchy. Usually, countries don’t want their names associated with diseases, and often geographical regions don’t either. That’s why names such as the “Hong Kong flu” aren’t used any more -- now influenza viruses carry genetic names such as H1N1 or H7N9.
The MERS coronavirus is clearly linked to the Middle East, however. All patients have either been in, or have traveled to, Jordan, Qatar or Saudi Arabia -- or they have been infected by travelers from those countries. Cases have been seen in France, Germany and Britain.
Researchers worried about what to name SARS when it broke out in 2003. It was first seen in China, but the World Health Organization finally settled on the name severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS.

Quote:At the time it was named, expert had not yet figured out precisely what type of virus it was. An unprecedented mutation is the thought at this time.

The new MERS virus is a distant cousin of SARS. Coronaviruses are a big family and they usually cause common cold-like symptoms in people. MERS appears to have come from bats, de Groot’s group reports.
“The novel coronavirus seems most closely related to as yet unclassified viruses from insectivorous European and African bats in the Vespertilionidae and Nycteridae families, respectively,” they write. It’s unlikely most patients were directly infected by bats, however, the Coronavirus Study Group said. Bats have probably infected some other animal, which in turn is infecting humans, they said.
But the virus can transmit from person to person, especially in hospitals, and that worries health officials. SARS spread easily in hospitals when it flashed around the world, infecting close to 8,000 people and killing 775 of them, before it was stopped.
There’s no vaccine against
MERS and antiviral drugs don’t appear to be of much use against it, either. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has told U.S. hospitals to take strict precautions if someone shows up with symptoms and has recently traveled to the Middle East. Health care workers in contact with such patients should wear special face masks, gloves and gowns and follow other protocols to protect themselves and other patients.
The World Health Organization says there are more questions than answers about MERS. “We know this virus has infected people since 2012, but we don't know where this virus lives,” WHO says in a statement on its website.
“We know that when people get infected, many of them develop severe pneumonia. We are not sure why we are seeing this pattern and if it will change over time,” WHO added.

Quote:"The greatest global concern, however, is about the potential for this new virus to spread."

Nothing to see here: Arrest in MA shrugged off
Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 12:50 PM PDT

On radio this morning, Glenn shared a strange story out of Boston that involves a group of foreign chemical engineering students trespassing at a major water supply near Boston. Even more bizarre – law enforcement’s reaction (or lack thereof) to the trespass.
“Tell me the story out of Boston this morning, Pat,” Glenn said. “Here’s breaking news for you, but don’t worry. Why should anyone pay attention to what happens in Boston?”
“Yeah, there are just seven chemical engineers that were, I guess, on a class outing,” Pat joked. “[They were] trespassing at a major reservoir in Boston, and these chemical engineers just happen to be from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore. I’m sure there’s nothing to look at.”
A local TV station had the report:
REPORTER: State police issued summons for the group for trespassing but did not find any evidence of any other crimes. Still they are stepping up patrols at water supply facilities around the state. This all happened at the Quabbin Reservoir in Belchertown. The reservoir is the main water supply for most of the state including the Boston area. Now shortly after midnight Tuesday state police discovered seven people walking from the reservoir, five men and two women. The men told police they are chemical engineers who recently graduated college and claimed they wanted to see the Quabbin because of their education and career interests. Well, state police say their backgrounds are from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Singapore but they live in various parts of Massachusetts, one in New York City.
“So hold on just a second,” Glenn said. “So it’s Pakistan, Singapore, and Saudi Arabia.”
Something smells a little fishy when a seemingly unrelated group of foreign chemical engineering students suddenly converge on the same spot, at the same time.
“It’s not like a family. It’s not like we all grew up in the same neighborhood. It’s, we live in different parts now of the Northeast and we all came together to trespass,” Glenn said. not to call and say, “What time of day was it? That they just decided to come together from different parts of New England, all of these, you know, disconnected guys from different countries.7
Unrelated to the post I made about animal die offs on the Chilean coast, but it could be responsible for an even bigger ecological disaster.
I was horrified to seethe number of sites being mined by so many different countries. Apart from the eco disaster, there could be political arguments about who owns a particular section of sea bed.

The United Nations has published its first plan for managing the extraction of so-called "nodules" - small mineral-rich rocks - from the seabed.

A technical study was carried out by the UN's International Seabed Authority - the body overseeing deep sea mining.

It says companies could apply for licences from as soon as 2016.

I don't think we own the deep ocean in the sense that we can do what we like with it”

Dr Jon Copley
University of Southampton
The idea of exploiting the gold, copper, manganese, cobalt and other metals of the ocean floor has been considered for decades but only recently became feasible with high commodity prices and new technology.

Conservation experts have long warned that mining the seabed will be highly destructive and could have disastrous long-term consequences for marine life.

The ISA study itself recognizes that mining will cause "inevitable environmental damage".

But the report comes amid what a spokesman describes as "an unprecedented surge" of interest from state-owned and private mining companies.
The ISA study itself recognizes that mining will cause "inevitable environmental damage".

But the report comes amid what a spokesman describes as "an unprecedented surge" of interest from state-owned and private mining companies.
A massive explosion from a meteor which crashed into the Moon was visible to the naked eye on Earth, NASA says. A boulder-sized meteor slammed into the moon in March, causing an explosion so bright anyone looking up at the right moment would have spotted it, NASA said. NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office is reporting the discovery of the brightest impact seen on the Moon in the eight years the monitoring program has run the National Geographic reports. About 300 lunar impacts have been logged over the years but this latest impact, from March 17, is considered much, much brighter than anything else observed. It is understood the space rock left a 20m-wide crater after it slammed into the Moon’s surface at 90,000km/h. “We have seen a couple of others in the ‘wow’ category but not this bright,” said Robert Suggs, manager of NASA’s Lunar Impact Monitoring Program at Marshall Spaceflight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The blast lasted only about a single second and shone like a 4th magnitude star—making it bright enough to see with just the unaided eye. –Herald Sun

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity used its front left Hazard-Avoidance Camera for this image of the rover's arm over the drilling target "Cumberland" during the 275th Martian day, or sol, of the rover's work on Mars (May 15, 2013). The rover team plans to use Curiosity's drill to collect a powdered sample from the interior of the rock for analysis by laboratory instruments inside the rover. This is the mission's second rock-drilling target. The rover drove from its position beside the first drilling target, "John Klein," to its position beside Cumberland with drives of 121 inches (308 centimeters) on Sol 273 (May 13) and 26.6 inches (67.5 centimeters) on Sol 275. Curiosity's total odometry on Mars is now 2,385 feet (727 meters). Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech
This thread has been made to be a continuing capture of all daily earth changes from all over the globe. Keeping these happenings in one place will make it much easier to keep up with what is happening day to day. Like Solar and EQ threads we have these Earth Changes will have their own place.

So much is happening day to day and hour to hour. Those that are un-informed will deal with so much more as the days of SHTF approaches.

Please!!!!! All I ask is stay on subject and not stray with other chit chat. This is too important to run off track.

I was not sure where to put this link. When I started reading about these Asian lady bugs predating upon native species, I thought the article was just that about another introduced species proving a problem for local bugs. Reading on I became fascinated by the contents of this tiny bug's body. Apparently it synthesis its own antibiotic, and could in the future be a source of research for human drugs.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-22554162

The Asian ladybird was originally brought in to control aphids in greenhouses.
But it has escaped and is increasing uncontrollably across Europe, wiping out native species.
The alien is winning, say scientists, because its body fluid contains a parasite toxic to other insects.
Sometimes called the harlequin, the Asian ladybird (Harmonia axyridis) can devour over two hundred aphids a day.
They are seen as a natural and effective solution to the problems posed by these pests in greenhouses.
In this new research, scientists have shown that it is the biological system of the Asian ladybird that gives it the edge when it comes to competing with native species.
The invader has an extremely powerful immune system.
The body fluid of the insect contains a strong antibiotic compound called harmonine as well as antimicrobial peptides. These allow the invasive to fight off pathogens more effectively than natives.
In the UK, researchers are very keen for people to report any sightings of the harlequin. They have just launched a smartphone app that helps people record details of the ladybirds.
This next bit is fascinating, they can get back at my weed killer spraying neighbor!!.....
